Zotero supports thousands of different style guides. How does Zotero work? The series of short videos linked in this guide will walk you through how to download and use Zotero. For most sources, you can do this automatically by simply clicking a few buttons. Zotero also includes a plug-in for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice (and now with Google Docs!) that allows you to insert citations by dragging-and-dropping them into the document and create a bibliography at the end of the paper. When you visit a web page that you'd like to use in your research, Zotero lets you take a snapshot of the web page, locate and download the full-text of the article that is represented by the web page, and capture a properly-formatted citation to its source. You can install a Zotero plug-in that works with your web browser. Learning how to use citation management software can improve the efficiency of your research and save you hundreds of hours with papers that you'll write in the future! Zotero is a free citation management program that helps you collect and easily organize your research information. After doing your research, you can waste hours and hours getting your citations into the proper format, in the correct order in your paper, and listed in your bibliography. How many sources did you cite in it? How did you manage all of those references and sources? For large papers, you may need to keep track of dozens or even hundreds of sources. Or you can create notes as you read.Think of the last research paper you wrote. Depending on your preferences, you can rely entirely on highlights, then annotate them in Zotero after they have been extracted. You can also add further notations if you wish. When clicked, the blue references after each note will take you directly to the page of the document on which the note was created. Highlights will be in quotations, while notes will be italicized:ģ. Your highlights and notes will appear in the "Notes" tab. This will create a new note under your source. To extract your highlights and notes from a pdf, right lick on the pdf and select Manage Attachments > Extract Annotations:Ģ. After doing so, they will appear in the "Notes" tab along with clickable citations that will allow you to jump directly to associated pages in the document.ġ. Once you highlight text and create notes inside a pdf, you will need to extract these annotations to see them in Zotero. Your highlights and annotations will be saved inside the pdf, so remember to click "Save" when you are finished with your annotations: Type your note into the box and close it (it will automatically save):ģ. Click the "Note" button under the "Comment" tab in Foxit Reader, then click anywhere on the document to create a note:Ģ. Then, drag your cursor over the text that you want to highlight:ġ. To highlight in Foxit Reader, select "Highlight" under the "Home" tab. Double click on a source in Zotero, then double click on the pdf to open the pdf:Ģ. Notes are a great way to respond to an article and get your ideas down as your read.ġ. Notes will allow you to respond to articles, save them inside the article, and later extract them to Zotero using Zotfile. Highlighting is great for pulling portions of articles that you would like to quote directly in your writing. Highlighting will highlight text that will later be extracted to Zotero's notes tab. There are two ways to take notes in most pdf readers: highlighting and notes. Zotero will work with any pdf editor, but Foxit Reader will be used for the demonstration below. Using a pdf editor in combination with Zotero and Zotfile will allow you to take notes directly in your pdfs, extract them to the "Notes" tab in Zotero, and jump directly to the pages of the article that include notes.
